Spurs Strike Gold: De’Aaron Fox Trade Sparks New Era in San Antonio

Email :1

Although it hasn’t even been a week since the NBA trade deadline passed, we think we already have a pretty good idea of who won and who lost.

The Dallas Mavericks’ decision to ship franchise centerpiece Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis has already backfired, as Davis is expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks due to a left adductor strain.

Doncic is bound to be a star in Los Angeles, but he hasn’t quite reached that status yet, as he went for only 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting in his Lakers debut on Monday night.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Butler is off to a strong start with the Golden State Warriors, Kyle Kuzma is establishing himself as a serviceable piece with the Milwaukee Bucks and De’Andre Hunter is sure to make the 43-10 Cleveland Cavaliers better than they already are.

But no team has benefited from the trade deadline more than the San Antonio Spurs.

San Antonio acquired De’Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings as part of a three-team deal that involved the Chicago Bulls, and the 27-year-old looks right at home with the Spurs.

In four games with his new team, Fox has averaged 21.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists. The San Antonio offense has put up 121.0 points per contest with Fox in the mix, and by putting their new acquisition alongside Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs have created a formidable duo that few teams are going to be able to contain.

Getting Fox really was the best of both worlds for San Antonio. Not only did the Spurs get better for this season, but they also gave themselves a bona fide 1-2 punch for years to come. There’s plenty of young talent surrounding Fox and Wembanyama—who are both still on the come-up—so it shouldn’t come as a surprise when San Antonio is playing deep into the spring in the near future.

It’s not like Sacramento got the short end of the stick in the deal, either. Sure, they gave up a major weapon in Fox, but they managed to make that loss sting a little less by bringing in Zach LaVine from Chicago.

LaVine is still finding his footing with the Kings, going just 5-for-26 from 3-point range (19.2 percent) in his first four games with Sacramento. He has averaged 18.5 points, 3.3 boards and 3.3 assists.

There will come a day where it all does start to click for LaVine, and that’s when it’ll be easy to see that both the Spurs and Kings can consider themselves deadline winners. However, San Antonio will be the team that has more success in the long run.

As long as Fox stays healthy, there’s a very good chance that the Spurs end up having the best move of this year’s deadline. We’ve already seen injuries get to Davis, and there’s no telling how long Doncic will be able to stay healthy.
