The Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s hockey team are trading their usual shade of navy blue for a lighter shade as part of a series of outdoor games to be held at Wrigley Field in Chicago early in the new year.
On Monday, December 16, Notre Dame unveiled their special edition jerseys for the 2025 Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series, which will take place at the hallowed home of the Chicago Cubs on January 3 and 4. Notre Dame will take on Penn State on Friday, January 3.
The Fighting Irish jerseys, made by Under Armour, are mainly white with a new crest on the front. The crest consists of a large block C — to honour both the Cubs and the city of Chicago — with a partial leprechaun inside. The light blue colouring of the crest is a reference to the Chicago city flag. The outline and drop shadow of the block C is navy blue, with gold Notre Dame “Founder’s Lines” in the shadow at the bottom.
Running around the waist and the sleeves are two light blue stripes flanking a white stripe, with narrow navy blue outlines. The sleeves feature four gold shamrocks in the white stripe, another reference to the Chicago flag. Gold interlocking “ND” monograms appear on each shoulder.
The numbers on the sleeves are set in a narrow light blue block font with navy blue outlines, while those on the back add drop shadows with gold lines and a navy blue shamrock at the bottom of each digit. Names on the back are navy blue with light blue outlines.
The Frozen Confines series consists of a total of four games over the two days. Aside from Penn State and Notre Dame, the men’s teams from Ohio State and Michigan will renew their rivalry on Friday, January 3. The following days sees men’s teams from Wisconsin and Michigan State face off, as well as the women’s teams from Ohio State and Wisconsin.
The college games take place just days after the NHL Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues, which will also be held at Wrigley Field on December 31, 2024.
