English Premier League giants Manchester United are hoping to use the fronts of their shirts to shine a light on a worthy charity later this season.

The club announced this week that, as part of their front-of-shirt sponsorship deal with Qualcomm, they would swap out the Snapdragon logo for that of (RED), a global organization that works to fight HIV/AIDS and “the injustices that enable pandemics to thrive.” The Manchester United men’s first team will wear the logo in a Premier League match against West Ham United, currently scheduled for May 10, while their women’s team will wear it in an FA Women’s Super League match against Arsenal currently slated for May 11.

The partnership was announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Monday, January 20.

As part of Qualcomm’s deal with Manchester United, the company can select a charity to replace the Snapdragon logo on the front of the club’s shirts for one women’s and one men’s match per season. Qualcomm has a long history of working with (RED), along with other public and private partners, to bring connectivity and technology to underserved communities around the world.

“We believe that Snapdragon technology can help change the world, and we are proud to support (RED) and its mission to eradicate health injustice. Snapdragon is inside billions of devices around the world that people use every day, bringing technology to people’s fingertips and delivering lifechanging access to healthcare and other resources that would be inaccessible otherwise.

“As the front of shirt partner for Manchester United, we understand the power of the team’s front of shirt placement, with one Manchester United Premier League match providing the same exposure as a championship level sporting event, and we couldn’t think of a better organization to spotlight for the more than one billion Manchester United fans than (RED).”

— Don McGuire, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Qualcomm Inc.

Fans will be able to purchase limited edition United shirts with the (RED) logo on the front, along with other limited edition apparel. The proceeds from the sale of that merchandise will be donated to the Global Fund, with additional matching funds provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

(RED) was founded in U2 frontman Bono and American activist/attorney Bobby Shriver in 2006 to fight HIV/AIDS. The organization “partners with the world’s most iconic brands and people to create products and experiences that raise money, heat, and urgency for the fight against AIDS.” Since 2006, (RED) has raised $785 million for the Global Fund — which works to end the world’s deadliest pandemics, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria — and impacted the lives of 325 million people. Money raised by (RED) funds HIV/AIDS grants, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, which is home to more than two-thirds of the global HIV population.
