Le Coq Sportif Files for Bankruptcy, Ends All Remaining Soccer Kit Deals – SportsLogos.Net News

Soccer seemingly lost a legendary brand last week when French sportswear company Le Coq Sportif filed for bankruptcy.

The company, which has been around since 1882, was placed under judicial restructuring proceedings by the Paris Commercial Court, according to a report in British newspaper The Sun. “Le Coq Sportif is relying on this procedure to respond to the challenges facing the brand while protecting its 330 employees and hundreds of indirect jobs,” a spokesperson for parent company Airesis is quoted as saying.

The court filings mean that Le Coq Sportif has ended all its current soccer kit deals with immediate effect. The only national team it currently outfits is South Africa, while the only club it outfits in Europe’s major top-flight domestic leagues is OGC Nice in France’s Ligue 1.

But Le Coq Sportif has made some legendary kits over the years. They outfitted the Argentinian men’s national team during the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, during which Diego Maradona scored the infamous “Hand of God” goal en route to the championship. The “Hand of God” jersey sold at auction in May 2022 for nearly $9 million US.

Italy also won a World Cup wearing Le Coq Sportif jerseys, beating West Germany 3-1 in the 1982 final held in Madrid, Spain.

But the company was also locked in a legal battle with the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) just before the 2022 World Cup. Fecafoot unilaterally ended its contract with Le Coq Sportif — which was supposed to run until the end of 2023 — four months before the tournament began and signed a new deal with One All Sports. A judge ruled in Le Coq Sportif’s favour in November 2022, saying the contract was still valid, but Fecafoot said it would appeal the decision. Le Coq Sportif later issued a statement saying it would not continue legal proceedings during the World Cup, paving the way for the Cameroon team to wear One All Sports kits in Qatar.

In club football, probably the most famous victory for a team wearing Le Coq Sportif kits was Aston Villa’s triumph over Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup final. Other high-profile clubs they outfitted at various times include AFC Ajax, Manchester City, Chelsea and Inter Milan.

Le Coq Sportif also supplied sportswear for Team France at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. But that was only after receiving an emergency loan of €12.5 million from the French government in 2023. The company is also embroiled in a legal battle with the French Rugby Federation over alleged unpaid sponsorship fees totaling €5.3 million.
