Kim Burrell doesn’t seem to like sharing her spotlight! The singer recently clocked a church crowd who tried to sing along to her performance, and social media is cuttin’ up over the clip. This moment comes less than a year after she went viral for a similar incident.
Here’s What Went Down With Kim Burrell At The Church
A video shared by The Shade Room shows Kim on stage with a mic in one hand and a cell phone in the other. In the clip’s first few seconds, she repeatedly looks at her phone, seemingly at the song lyrics. Then, as other voices in the crowd chimed in, Kim interrupted herself.
“Y’all want me to get beat up and tell y’all let that mask work for you,” Burrell joked. “Please let me sing my song tonight, I have a purpose….give me one round by myself. Can I have that?”
She followed that up with another jokey joke before returning to her performance. It appears the audience interaction happened at the first ‘Brothers Standing On Business’ gospel concert on Sept. 21 in Brooklyn, NYC. Burrell announced her plans to headline the event in May. Kim Went Viral For A Similar Moment In January
As mentioned, Burrell caught heat earlier this year after she addressed a congregant who wanted to sing with her. At the time, she was singing the hymn ‘Thank You, Lord’ at a church service and interrupted herself to silence the backup vocals. Let that mask work for you. I’m singing alone,” Burrell said. That’s where her “mask” joke at her recent performance came from. She later addressed the backlash by suggesting that she sometimes operates as a singer and prophet.
“Sometimes when I operate publicly, everybody doesn’t understand the dispensation of what I’m operating in, they just see me as Kim the singer that’s not being ‘the singer,’ who is not always the singer. I’m the preacher, I’m the person with the gift of prophetic,” she stated.
