Alleria Windrunner is one of the most important characters in World of Warcraft right now, and she has quite a history in the long-running fantasy franchise. Alleria was a major player in the original RTS Warcraft games, an elven ranger from Silvermoon who dedicated her efforts to the war between Alliance and Horde. She, alongside a party of heroes, went through the Dark Portal in order to put an end to that war and ensure peace for her family.
We didn’t hear from Alleria for a long time after that; she appeared in World of Warcraft only as a statue, or the namesake for a small settlement. As it turns out, she and her husband Turalyon had joined the Army of the Light, and in the realm of the Twisted Nether they fought a thousand-year long war. They turned back up in Legion, along with the Army of the Light, and they helped the heroes vanquish the threat of the Burning Legion.
In order to survive during the course of that long war, Alleria embraced the powers of shadow, absorbing the power of the dark naaru L’ura. She is the first Void Elf, which gives her both spectacular shadow powers, and also a constant torrent of corruptive whispers. Alleria is using the Void for heroic means, but she’s constantly at risk of becoming evil.
This animation sums up all of that lore with a very strong visual style; it’s very clear, and it’s a great way to catch up on Alleria’s lore before The War Within launches on Aug. 26.
