Top seed Sebastian Baez, others fall in Winston-Salem

Borna Coric of Croatia downed No. 1 seed Sebastian Baez of Argentina 6-3, 6-4 on an upset-filled day at the Winston-Salem Open on Tuesday in North Carolina.

Coric hit seven aces to Baez’s one and finished with a 16-5 advantage in total winners in the 81-minute match. Baez was just one of eight seeded players to lose his Round of 32 match on Tuesday, with three matches left to be played.

Among the upsets: Lucky loser Zachary Svajda took down No. 3 seed Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 6-4; David Goffin of Belgium eased past No. 5 seed Luciano Darderi of Italy 6-2, 6-4; China’s Juncheng Shang beat No. 7 seed Mariano Navone of Argentina 7-5, 6-3; Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild upset No. 8 seed Nuno Borges of Portugal 7-6 (2), 6-2; and qualifier Learner Tien outlasted No. 9 seed Fabian Marozsan 6-2, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (2).

Italian No. 10 seed Lorenzo Sonego and French No. 12 seed Arthur Rinderknech avoided the carnage, winning their matches in straight sets. But Spanish wild card Pablo Carreno Busta defeated Kazakh 13th seed Alxander Shevchenko 6-2, 6-2 in just 69 minutes, and Christopher Eubanks beat No. 14 seed Hugo Gaston 6-1, 6-4 in just 56 minutes.

No. 15 seed Pavel Kotov advanced with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over Frenchman Alexandre Muller. The remaining matches pitted No. 11 Alex Michelsen against Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics, sixth seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina against Belgium’s Zizou Bergs and No. 17 seed Roman Safiullin of Russia against France’s Corentin Moutet.
