Even though they just unveiled a new suite of logos in August, the SPHL’s Macon Mayhem are giving their fans another look this weekend.
This week, the Mayhem unveiled the alternate identity they’ll use on Saturday, February 1, as part of “Rebrand Night” against the Evansville Thunderbolts. For one night only, they’ll play as the Ocmulgee River Monsters.
The Ocmulgee River runs through the city of Macon, Georgia, and eventually merges with the Oconee River to form the Altamaha River that flows out to the Atlantic Ocean.
The logo was designed by Jason Villante of Redpin Design in Boca Raton, Florida — the same person who designed the new Mayhem logos unveiled back in August.
“The River Monsters’ identity depicts a formidable creature rising from the depths, clutching a hockey stick in its jaws,” Villante said. “The uniform pays homage to Muscogee Nation, incorporating symbols that reflect the tribe’s deep ties to nature, strength, and resilience, all brought to life through bold colors and dynamic design.” These tributes to the Muscogee people include the green, white and black colour scheme and the M between the eyes of the river monster.
The team didn’t specify exactly what species the river monster in the logo is. But according to Explore Georgia, a world record largemouth bass was caught on the river in 1932. The river is also a habitat for various species of sunfish, catfish, bluegill and crappie.
Secondary versions of the River Monsters logo include a wordmark with a long fin and the monster with the hockey stick on its own.
“We had dozens of options and ideas that came up within our office, but ultimately the River Monsters was one that stuck for our rebrand night, named after the river that runs through Macon,” added Graham Tuck, the Mayhem’s media relations and broadcasting coordinator, in an email. “we wanted one that was specific to the region, and fans would be able to connect with, while still being cool to look at and intimidating from a logo standpoint. And above all else, it had to be distinctly different from the Mayhem brand. Our goal for the night is to make our fans forget that they’re at a Mayhem game, and make them feel like they’re watching a completely different team.”
Along with the logo, the team will be wearing special River Monsters jerseys as part of Rebrand Night, but no photos of the jerseys were included with Tuesday’s announcement.
Game-worn River Monsters jerseys will be auctioned off in the lobby of the Macon Coliseum after the game.
