Everything we know about Deltarune, Toby Fox’s follow-up to Undertale

Email :10

The release schedule behind Deltarune, the next big RPG created by Undertale developer Toby Fox, is a bit confusing. In fall of 2018, Fox and his team released the first section of the game for free. Roughly three years later, he surprise-released Chapter 2 of the game and said that his team would release more of the game down the line. However, delivering on that initial promise has been slow going and has left many fans questioning when new content will be available.

This is all further complicated by the fact that Toby Fox is somehow both incredibly open as a developer and somewhat elusive. At points he’ll publish an in-depth update on the game’s progress and elaborate on the intricacies of shipping a game. But after a newsletter comes out, he might disappear for weeks or maybe months on end and leave fans guessing as to what the status of his next game is. To simplify it all, here is everything you need to know about Deltarune.

When will Deltarune Chapter 3, Chapter 4, and Chapter 5 be released?

Rather than release a full game all at once, Fox released chapters one and two of Deltraune in the fall of 2021 for free. Not long after that, Fox said that the team would release the next section of the game — Chapters 3, Chapter 4, and Chapter 5 — in one bundle and would charge for the game. (At the time, he did not say how much the game would cost.)

We don’t know when Toby Fox and his growing team of developers will release the next section of chapters. However, we’ve gotten several updates since the game’s initial release that can help tell us how far along in development the next parts of the game are.

Fox shared in the fall of 2023 that he no longer planned to release Chapter 3, Chapter 4, and Chapter 5 all at once. Instead, the team would only release Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 together. “The finish line of Chapter 5 is still pretty far off… and I don’t think anybody really wants to wait that long to release anything. Especially me,” he said. However, roughly a year passed and Fox still hadn’t released the third and fourth chapters of the game.

Development continued to hit snags and delayed the release of any new content. According to Fox, releasing a game in chapter installments complicated the entire development process. The creators of Delatune’s game engine, GameMaker Studio 2, had to go and add a new feature to the engine so the Deltarune team could continue to release the game in installments. Fox cited that, in addition to the extra work required to properly localize and debug the game, as part of the issues extending the timeline for development.
